01 The Conference

A chamber where
the world argues
toward peace.

Nineteen forty-five handed the world a promise — that words could go where armies could not. Every autumn, Hyderabad picks that promise back up and hands it to twelve chambers of students.

SOMUN runs on a simple conviction: the students who learn to negotiate today will refuse to escalate tomorrow. Three days of authentic procedure, live crisis injections and a press that publishes verdicts daily — nothing simulated halfway.

You will not watch from the gallery. You will draft, amend, hold the floor and defend your clause line by line until the gavel falls — and leave holding proof that you did.

Chapter I · The Origin

Born in Hyderabad. Built by delegates. Run on conviction.

SOMUN is a student-run Model United Nations conference — no faculty hand on the wheel. Since our first edition we have run on one belief: the habits you form and the voices that echo across a committee chamber are the same that keep rooms calm long after the certificates yellow.

The MMXXVI edition convenes over three charged days — October 30 through November 1, 2026 — at the Silver Oaks International School, Bowrampet Campus. Twelve chambers sit in session, from the Human Rights Council to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, each tailored to bring out the best in a delegate and steered by an executive board of decorated veterans.

An International Press corps publishes daily verdicts that travel far beyond the committee walls. And every delegate gets the same deal, whether it is a first conference or a fifteenth: authentic procedure, a dossier worth arguing over, and written feedback on every performance.

Chapter III · The Charter

What we stand on.

Four articles, in force since the first gavel. Open each one.

At SOMUN, procedure is not theatre. From the first roll call to the final vote, delegates experience a system built around the principles of real parliamentary debate: formal caucuses, moderated discussion, motions, amendments, points and voting.

You will sometimes have to choose between speaking now and listening longer. You will have to defend an idea you genuinely believe in, negotiate with someone who does not, and find the wording that everyone can finally stand behind. That is diplomacy.

We use procedure to create structure, not to create barriers. Once you understand how the room moves, the rules stop being something to memorise and become a language you can use.

Every delegate remembers a good chair.

The one who made a nervous first-timer raise their placard. The one who challenged an experienced delegate to go beyond a rehearsed speech. The one who knew when debate needed structure and when the room needed space to think.

Our executive boards are built around that responsibility. Chairs are expected to understand procedure, challenge ideas fairly, recognise substance over volume, and make every delegate feel that their contribution can change the direction of debate.

Because a committee is only as good as the people guiding it.

You can prepare your opening speech and recite it a hundred times. You can walk into committee knowing exactly what you want to accomplish.

Then something changes.

A crisis breaks. A leader resigns. Markets react. An alliance fractures. The press asks a question your delegation was never prepared to answer.

At SOMUN, delegates are expected to respond, not simply recite. Crisis updates and press interactions are designed to test the thing that matters most when plans stop working: judgement.

The press is not for decoration. It is another force in the room. Your words can shape the narrative, your decisions can create consequences, and your response can determine whether your delegation leads the story or gets written out of it.

Some delegates will walk into SOMUN with years of MUN experience. Others will be holding their first placard and wondering whether they are supposed to raise it yet.

Both belong here.

We do not believe a delegate should need a long résumé to have a seat at the table. Experience should help you grow, not become a wall between you and everyone else.

That means accessible procedure, meaningful opportunities to speak, fair recognition, and an environment where delegates can learn without being afraid to make mistakes.

Because the delegate who barely spoke at their first conference might become the person leading the room a few years later.

First-timers are strongest in ECOSOC, UNOOSA or DISEC where procedure is taught live; seasoned delegates should aim at HCC or Lok Sabha, where crisis updates arrive without warning.
